How Long Can a Dog Be Left Alone? Four Hours, and Why
Updated 4 minsSources (3)
Four hours, at most. The RSPCA doesn't hedge: "We recommend that you don't leave your dog alone for more than four hours; for puppies much less." The PDSA gives the same limit for routine absences.

Why four? So your dog has the chance to exercise, go to the toilet and spend time with people, says the RSPCA. A full working day is roughly twice that. A dog on their own from nine to five needs someone to come in halfway through.
Is it illegal to leave a dog alone in the UK?
There's no legal time limit. What the law sets instead is a duty of care. In England and Wales, section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 says whoever is responsible for an animal must take reasonable steps to meet its needs: a suitable environment and diet, the chance to behave normally, company or separation from other animals as it needs, and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease. A dog regularly shut in all day with no toilet break and no company can fall short of that, whatever the clock says.
Can I leave my dog alone for 8 hours?
Not by the RSPCA's or the PDSA's measure. Eight hours is double their four-hour limit. The RSPCA's separation advice suggests a dog sitter or dog walker instead, so someone keeps your dog company and takes them out.
Ways to break up a working day:
- a midday dog walk, so neither stretch alone is much longer than four hours
- a pop-in visit for a toilet break, food and a fuss
- doggy day care, so your dog isn't alone at all
- a friend, relative or neighbour who comes round at lunchtime

How long can a puppy be left alone?
Much less than an adult. Neither charity gives a single figure, since it varies from puppy to puppy, though the PDSA notes that four hours would usually be too long for an active young puppy.
So build up slowly. The PDSA suggests starting by stepping a short distance away and rewarding your puppy for staying calm, then leaving the room for a moment, then the house for a few minutes, and stretching the time bit by bit. Your vet can tell you what's realistic for your puppy's age.
What about senior dogs?
Neither charity gives a separate figure for older dogs. Some do need to go out more often, though, or take medication at set times. If yours does, the real limit is whenever the next toilet break or dose is due. Your vet is the right person to ask.
Can I leave my dog alone overnight?
No. The RSPCA's four-hour advice is there so dogs can go to the toilet, exercise and have company, and a night on their own rules out all three. If you're away overnight, a sitter who stays in your home, or a trusted, licensed home boarder, keeps your dog's routine going. We've set out what an overnight dog sitter costs in the UK.
Signs your dog is struggling when left alone
The PDSA lists the common ones:
- barking and whining
- chewing or other destructive behaviour
- trying to escape
- weeing or pooing in the house
- pacing
If you spot these, cut the time alone and talk to your vet. They can check for a medical cause and point you to an accredited behaviourist.
How to get your dog used to being left alone
Start small, and keep your comings and goings low-key. Before you go out, the PDSA recommends making sure your dog has had enough exercise, a chance to go to the toilet, a safe and comfortable bed, and something to do, like a treat-dispensing toy or a puzzle. The RSPCA also has a guide to teaching a dog to be left alone.
